You’ve booked your flights and sorted an awesome chalet, you’ve been reading up on the best ski gear and you’ve even been building up your fitness…but before you finish packing, double check you’ve got these five essentials for your skiing trip. These are items that every family needs for a fun-filled holiday in the mountains. We’d never go skiing without these 5 vital bits in our luggage!
Don’t forget to pack your base layers! Make sure yours are made from natural fibres, like merino wool which is renowned for being a great thermal due to its air-trapping qualities and will stay dry in the snow too. Sumptuously soft and comfortable, you’ll not want to take these off for pretty much your entire ski trip. For adults, Howies have some high-quality merino base layers, but for your children, we’d recommend our very own specially designed, seam-free LUKLA base layer and KOSI hoodie – they are the ideal ski wear to keep them warm on the slopes!
The UV rays are much stronger at altitude and the sun reflects off the snow, so your skin needs extra protection even when the forecast is cloudy. Make sure you buy a bottle of SPF30 to SPF50 for your face (we like this one) before you leave home (big enough for the whole family!) and remember to put it in your hold luggage. We definitely recommend purchasing before you leave the UK as it costs an arm and a leg in the mountains, and your skin cannot be without it. Seriously.
You’ll thank us for this reminder. Having a versatile small backpack when you’re out on the slopes with little people is so handy for bringing along drinks and snacks for you and the nippers. Not only is it fab as a mini vending machine for hungry skiers, it’s also a great place to shove any layers they take off, or to store extras if the temperature is due to drop. This one is the perfect size and has waist and chest straps for comfortable skiing.
This isn’t an advert, we promise! Insurance is something that many people either forget about, thinking their EHIC card covers them, or they assume that a bog-standard travel insurance policy is enough. We’ve learned from cumulative experience, that normal holiday insurance won’t cover a nasty tumble off-piste – or an accident with a ski pole – so make sure you’ve arranged the level of insurance you and your family need for this ski holiday. Go to a reputable company, remember to read the small print, and print a copy of your policy to have with you. Hopefully, you won’t need it – but it’ll be reassuring having it there.
Sense of humour
Okay, okay, so not technically something you’d need to find space for in your luggage but bear with me…If you’ve never been skiing, you’ll need to pack a tonne of this. You are going to have some cracking wipe-outs, and your children will be mocking you for weeks to come. So dust the snow off your knees and laugh it off – they’re going to need to see you enjoying the experience of learning a new skill so they brave it too. And you can all have a giggle playing in the snow, making memories that last a lifetime.
With careful preparation and remembering to go with the flow if things don’t go to plan, you and your family are going to have an amazing skiing trip. All that fresh air and exercise, cosy cuddles in the chalet and non-stop fun in the mountains, you’re going to come back feeling rejuvenated and closer as a family than ever before! In fact, you’re making us a little bit jealous…think we might have to book another family skiing holiday!
