Often my customers will ask the question “What are the benefits of merino wool for kids?”. There are a lot of base layer products on the market and it can be a minefield. Some are 100% merino, like my LUKLA base layer and KOSI hoodie. You also get merino blends and you get man made, technical sports fabrics.
Essentially merino wool is the best, natural fibre for the job. It has many benefits and I will try and run through them all here.
Merino wool is…
· Brilliant for regulating temperature. When worn against the skin, and as part of a layering system, it traps a layer of air. This air allows the body to remain at a steady temperature. It stops you getting too hot or too cold. When it comes to being a parent it means you don’t have to worry when out in the elements. You can be confident they will be comfortable whatever the activity and you won’t have to keep stopping to check and readjust kit. Especially with younger kids who aren’t always able to verbalise discomfort. Even kids who can talk but are still young struggle to let us know they are uncomfortable and may just have a tantrum instead.
· Naturally wicking. This means moisture is taken away from the body which helps with temperature regulation.
· Great at retaining its warmth even when wet. Most kids wear cotton, especially babies and toddlers. Cotton is beautifully soft but it is no good at keeping kids warm. If it gets wet it also gets cold very quickly. Merino wool retains its warmth which makes it great for kids who can’t stay away from the water or as a spare tops when your kids have been swimming in cold water and need to warm up properly.
· It’s crease resistant and very lightweight. You never used to carry so much kid before kids right? Now it seems you need the kitchen sink. Merino wool packs down small so you save on space and weight. It is also stain and smell resistant so you can wear the same top on week long adventures. If you are camping you can avoid the bedtime battle all together and roll them into their sleeping bags wearing their merino for a cosy nights sleep. Our Lukla base layers as well as being 100% merino are also seamless in the body and trunk making them extra comfortable and soft against the skin.
What more do you want from your clothing?!
If you can afford 100% merino wool then this is your best option as it will do all of the above better than a merino blend or a synthetic fibre.
