One of the first questions I get asked by many of you, is where the name Amamaya comes from and why I decided to give my brand this name. So I thought I’d tell you the story.
The name actually came before anything else, before any designs, before I’d even really decided to go ahead and start a kids clothing brand, before my brain kicked in and asked “What on earth are you doing?!” (That question only occurred to me once it was too late!).
My husband and I fell in love with Nepal while trekking to Everest Base Camp in 2013. It’s a beautiful country and has remained very much in our hearts. When our daughter was born in 2016 we had the same conversations and debates over baby names that may couples experience. As we had spent most of our time together enjoying climbing and mountaineering we wanted to give her a name that represented this and meant something to us but we couldn’t agree on anything that didn’t sound a bit weird… Snowdon, Everest, Brecon, Siula, none of them were quite right. In the end we settled on Maya. It means the unconditional love in Nepalese and we thought it was really pretty. We still wanted to give her a mountain name and while trekking in Nepal we had both agreed that Ama Dablam was the most beautiful mountain we saw while we were there. Ama Dablam literally translates as Mothers Necklace, so we gave her Ama as her middle name to represent Mother Earth as well as mountains.
I love that she will point to a picture we have of the mountain and say “Ama Dablam Sweet, that’s my mountain” I love it less when she goes on to say she will climb it when she’s older and bigger!
It was only natural then, to call my business Amamaya. It wouldn’t exist without my daughter. Maya was, and still is, the inspiration behind the brand. I make everything for her first and foremost, as a mum and an adventurer.
The logo you may be interested to know, is the lose outline of the mountain Ama Dablam, and the little sun is a nod to the Nepalese flag if you tilt the logo on its side. What do you think of the name? I’d love you to let me know in the comments.
